From Follower-Culture to Self-Mastery: Digital Consciousness in Business
The other day, I was discussing my marketing plan with one of my mentee’s companies, and she said something remarkable.
She said, “I started following the digital trend and kept promoting our social presence, but it is not working. People do come, but little happens to our sales funnel.”
Here I give you excerpts from the next discussion I had with the sales team of that company. I explain in a few parts below — each one holding a key to digital consciousness and self-mastery in marketing.
Age of Endless Scrolling: The Habit of the Digital Mind
In my personal opinion, people love scrolling, and it has become a new habit of humankind. However, scrolling alone doesn’t produce impactful results for the products or services you market online.
People tend to browse through posts, but they rarely do so with a purchasing intent. You may walk on the road and others can see you from a distance — that doesn’t mean they wish to engage or buy.
This is the age of endless scrolling, where people have developed a knack for consuming content mindlessly.
Today, people wake up not to the sound of an alarm or a bird’s song, but to the ping of notifications. Millions of users go through the feeds of multiple social media accounts every morning — digital whispers filling their minds.
Someday you must ask yourself:
“Who am I behind these social media posts? How do I think nowadays — and are my thoughts being directed by the digital world?”
There was once a Kurukshetra where kingdoms fought with bows, arrows, and swords. Today, the Digital Kurukshetrais where people engage in a battle of trolling, opinions, likes, and dislikes.
Welcome to the new battlefield — the field of digital consciousness.
The Illusion of Follower-Culture
A follower does not necessarily mean a lead in business, particularly in social media marketing.
A follower is simply a person who has minimal affinity for your shared content but is not necessarily ready to purchase your products or services.
This follower culture is an illusion — one that makes many digital marketers mistake followers for potential customers.
In truth, a lead always starts as a suspect, then becomes a prospect, and finally turns into a customer. There are structured processes behind this. If you are not particular about them, your followers will not convert into buyers.
When sales don’t move, you question what went wrong. But the truth is — you believed that growing followers automatically deepens your sales funnel.
In reality, all it takes is marketing awareness, understanding customer psychology, and mastering digital self-discipline.
Digital self-mastery begins when you stop chasing followers and start nurturing meaningful, conscious relationships with your audience.
Awareness in Digital Marketing: The New Sadhana
My Guru once taught me:
“Whatever you do, if done with awareness, it naturally becomes a sadhana. Everything you do without awareness becomes bondage.” — Om Swami
If you apply this to digital marketing, you’ll realise that awareness is your greatest strategic tool.
Post on social media — but do it with awareness.
Be conscious of what your followers gain from each post.
If you promote your own service, give your readers something practically useful.
At the same time, your content must be unique and aligned with your audience’s needs. If it’s not, people won’t emotionally identify your promotion with their necessities.
Hence, continuous observation of audience behaviour grants new ideas for social media awareness and conscious content creation.
You need only one ball to take a wicket — the rest can have different outcomes. Likewise, one well-crafted, aware post can create far more impact than dozens of random ones.
From Comparison to Creation
The biggest trap of digital life is comparison.
Everyone seems happier, wealthier, and wiser — yet the Bhagavad Gita reminds us in Chapter 3, Verse 35:
“It is better to follow one’s own path imperfectly than to follow another’s perfectly.”
In simple terms: Be original, even if you stumble.
Awareness doesn’t originate in a man’s Chitta (Sanskrit for “mind”) but in the conscious realm of a yogi who is deeply aware. If you cultivate peace through mindfulness, this state becomes accessible.
You can start with simple practices — meditation, mindful chanting, or mental discipline techniques that train your mind for clarity and focus.
My own success — in both business and life — came from two decades of meditation and spiritual practice. It was not an easy path, but neither are opulence and material achievements.
Throughout my career, I have strategized and operated businesses with awareness. Problems become easier to solve when the brain is not bombarded by endless thoughts.
This did not happen overnight. Like any digital self-mastery, it took patience and consistent practice. Please don’t expect an instant fix — every conscious being and every brand matures slowly. Read more.
Conclusion: Rise from Follower to Self-Master
That is my take on this subject.
I welcome you to be a Self-Master — a being who lives and works with digital consciousness in this era of uncertainty.
Remember: awareness is the real algorithm.
When you move beyond follower culture, you step into spiritual use of technology — where marketing becomes mindful, creativity becomes conscious, and your brand becomes an extension of your highest awareness.
